'The Two Popes' Explores an Unlikely Friendship at the Winter KCET Cinema Series on November 12

The film is based on a play by Oscar nominated writer Anthony McCarten ("The Theory of Everything," "Darkest Hour") and stars Anthony Hopkins (Pope Benedict) and Jonathan Pryce (Cardinal Bergoglio) in an intimate look at a historic turning point in the Catholic Church. 

“I think what sets this film apart from others I’ve done is that it’s very much a debate. It’s a debate between two positions we’re all familiar with — the traditionalist and the reformist — trying to find common ground,” said McCarten. “I hope that aspect of it makes it seem more relevant than just anyone interested in the Catholic or Christian faiths. I think it speaks to the central debate that’s happening in society and politics right now; the desperate need for leaders to find some common ground.”

The film screens at 7:00 p.m. at the ArcLight Cinemas in Sherman Oaks. Immediately following the screening, Deadline’s chief film critic Pete Hammond, who can also be seen on KCET’s Must See Movies, will moderate a Q&A session with director director Fernando Ferreira Meirelles ("City of Gold"), and writer Anthony McCarten. “The Two Popes” will be released by Netflix on December 20, 2019.

The winter season of the KCET Cinema Series runs October 22 through December 10. The winter series is sold out and there will not be walk-up admissions available for the screenings.
