Adapted from August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" celebrates the artistry and transformative power of the blues and the artists who refused to let prejudices dictate their worth. Academy Award-winner Viola Davis portrays “Mother of Blues,” Ma Rainey. The cast also stars Chadwick Boseman (in his final film appearance), with Glynn Turman, Colman Domingo and Michael Potts in supporting roles. The film is produced by Denzel Washington and Todd Black, adapted for the screen by Ruben Santiago-Hudson and directed by Tony Award-winner George C. Wolfe.

Davis spoke of the film’s importance, “It’s a story of being Black in America, and having a dream. It’s about having vision and talent, and all the obstacles that are put in your way to keep you from attaining your dream, to keep you from that levelled playing ground. We could have done this play 100 years ago, and it would still have been relevant.”

Immediately following the screening, Deadline’s chief film critic Pete Hammond, who can also be seen on KCET’s Must See Movies, will moderate a Q&A with Tony Award-winning director George C. Wolf with cast members Colman Domingo, Glynn Turman, Michael Potts and Dusan Brown.

The film screens on Friday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. PST. Only $10 per viewing link.
