Winter 2016 KCET Cinema Series Schedule

The popular winter KCET Cinema Series will begin its season at the ArcLight Cinemas in Sherman Oaks on Tuesday, October 18. The series offers filmgoers the best of Hollywood, independent and top award-winning festival films. All films are screened prior to their theatrical release in Los Angeles and the series is hosted by nationally recognized film expert Pete Hammond.

The screening are held on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 pm October 18, 25, November 1, 15, 22, 29, and December 6 and 13. Each screening is followed by a lively Q & A with the film's top talent and filmmakers.

October 18- LOVING

Loving Official Trailer 1 (2016) - Joel Edgerton Movie

From acclaimed writer/director Jeff Nichols, Loving celebrates the real-life courage and commitment of an interracial couple, Richard and Mildred Loving (Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga), who married and then spent the next nine years fighting for the right to live as a family in their hometown. Their civil rights case, Loving v. Virginia, went all the way to the Supreme Court, which in 1967 reaffirmed the very foundation of the right to marry – and their love story has become an inspiration to couples ever since.

October 25- NOCTURNAL ANIMALS

Nocturnal Animals Official Trailer 1 (2016) - Jake Gyllenhaal Movie

A psychological thriller written, co-produced and directed by Tom Ford based on the novel Tony and Susan by Austin Wright. The film tells the story of a prominent Los Angeles art-gallery owner's charmed life that is strained by the constant absence of her current husband’s hectic travel schedule. While he is away, she is stunned to hear from her first husband who she hasn’t seen in years by the arrival of a manuscript written by him. The manuscript tells a powerful and dark story and it forces her to examine her past. The film stars Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal.

November 1- BLEED FOR THIS

Bleed for This Official Trailer 1 (2016) - Miles Teller Movie

The film is written and directed by Ben Younger and is based on the true life story of former world boxing champion Vinny Paz.  The film stars Miles Teller with a supporting cast of Aaron Eckhart, Katey Sagal, Ciaran Hinds and Ted Levine. The film had its world premiere at this year’s Telluride Film Festival.

The central character of the film Miss Sloane (Jessica Chastain) is a hard-nosed and unrelenting D.C. lobbyist who puts her career in jeopardy to fight against all odds the most influential powers on Capitol Hill to achieve gun control measures in America.  Directed by John Madden, well-known for his films “Shakespeare In Love” and “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.”

November 22- LION

Lion Official Trailer 1 (2016) - Dev Patel Movie

An Australian-American-British drama directed by Garth Davis based on the non-fiction book A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley. The film tells the unique story of Saroo Brierly a five-year-old Indian boy who is lost on the streets of Calcutta and separated from his biological family.  He survives terrible hardships and is eventually adopted by an Australian family. 25 years later Saroo begins searching for his long-lost family using Google Earth. The film had its world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

La La Land (2016 Movie) Official Teaser Trailer – 'City Of Stars'

The much anticipated romantic musical comedy written and directed by Damien Chazelle who made his directorial debut with the film “Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench.”  In 2014, he wrote and directed his second feature film “Whiplash,” based on his 2013 award-winning short film “Whiplash.” The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and went on to receive five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. Chazelle received a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. He is also known for co-writing “10 Cloverfield Lane.”  The film stars Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, and J.K. Simmons.

December 6- HIDDEN FIGURES

Hidden Figures | Official Trailer [HD] | 20th Century FOX

The film is based on the non-fiction book Hidden Figures about the African-American physicist, mathematician and space scientist Katherine Johnson and her two colleagues Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson who together assist NASA by calculating the flight trajectories for Project Mercury and the 1969 Apollo 11 flight to the moon.  The film stars Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae, Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, and Jim Parsons.

December 13- 20th CENTURY WOMEN

20th Century Women Official Trailer #1 (2017)

From award-winning director Mike Mills (“Beginners”); the film is a tender comedy set in Santa Barbara in 1979 and explores the lives of three generations of women that come together to teach a young boy about life, love and his place in the world.  The film stars Annette Bening, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig, Lucas Jade Zumann, and Billy Crudup.  The film premiered at this year’s New York Film Festival.
