On the Ground with L.A.'s Anti-Trump Protesters
Donald Trump's presidential election victory was announced and conceded Wednesday morning. That night thousands gathered to walk the streets of Downtown Los Angeles and protest the results. The primary rallying point was City Hall, from which groups splintered through different routes and shut down streets for several hours. A group made its way onto the 101 Freeway, blocking access and leading to arrests.
Chants ranged spontaneously from the standard "the people united will never be defeated," to the popular "not my president," to the quote-spinning "pussy grabs back," to the simple and direct "fuck Donald Trump." Signs spoke to concerns around sexism, racism, fascism, homophobia, sexual assault, and who we are as a country.
Similar, smaller-scale actions took place on Thursday, and the majority of online discussion and organization around future protests focuses on Saturday's march from MacArthur Park.
