Burbank, Calif. – May 29, 2018 – KCET, the nation’s largest independent public television station, announced today the online launch of “California Offices Explained,” a key primary election initiative designed to help California voters better understand the lesser known offices on California’s ballot. The series of short videos under BALLOT BRIEF, the acclaimed online resource for California politics created by the news team at SOCAL CONNECTED, will help voters decipher office seats on the ballot leading up to the June 5 California primary election. Additionally, the new series (designed to be quickly and easily understood by viewers) will explain why California utilizes the “top two” primary system. Val Zavala, award-winning former anchor of SOCAL CONNECTED, returns to host five non-partisan videos utilizing fun graphics and easy-to-understand language. “California Offices Explained,” rolls out today, Tues., May 29, online at kcet.org/ballotbrief as well as on YouTube.

The first video will explain California's “top two” primary system where voters get the same ballot despite their political party affiliation. The other four videos will explain some of the lesser-known offices on the ballot and communicate why these offices matter to the electorate. The state offices to be discussed include State Controller, Board of Equalization, Secretary of State and State Superintendent of Public Instruction. The five videos will be supplemented with an online article that details information about the candidates currently running for each office.
