Burbank, Calif. – Sept. 17, 2018 – KCET, the nation’s largest independent public television station, announced today the rebroadcast of the documentary INVENTING LA: The Chandlers and Their Times which originally aired on KCET in 2009. Emmy Award winning filmmaker Peter Jones (also producing KCET's BLUE SKY METROPOLIS airing next summer) chronicles the epic saga of the most powerful family in Los Angeles history – the Chandlers. For four generations, they wielded unique influence through their newspaper, the Los Angeles Times. INVENTING LA: The Chandlers and Their Times airs on Tues., Oct. 9 at 9:00 p.m. PT on KCET in Southern California.
The rebroadcast of the Emmy® winning documentary will follow the season nine premiere of KCET news documentary series SOCAL CONNECTED which will kick off the season taking viewers inside L.A.’s newsrooms, documenting one of the most disruptive years in the local media landscape as well as interviewing new owner of the L.A. Times Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong.
INVENTING LA employs unprecedented access to the family and the Times’ archives which span the century that Harrison Gray Otis, Harry Chandler, Norman Chandler and Otis Chandler stood at the helm of the newspaper and at the center of the city’s economic, social and cultural growth. A character-driven film, it traces the ruthless, ingenious and often self-serving methods by which four publishers used the newspaper to turn a tiny town into a world metropolis. In their pursuit of personal agendas and civic ideals, they built the city of the future and exposed the dark side of the American Dream. Their reign ended when a longtime family feud brought down one of the country’s great newspaper dynasties.
