KCET and PBS SoCal Nominated for 25 Los Angeles Area Emmys; Combined Total Leads All Other LA Broadcasters For Second Consecutive Year

Burbank, Calif. – June 8, 2021 ­­– PBS SoCal and KCET, Southern California’s flagship PBS stations, announced today that they received 25 nominations for the 73rd Annual Los Angeles Area Emmy® Awards presented by the Los Angeles Television Academy, leading all other LA broadcasters with the most nominations for the second consecutive year. The nominations were spread across 12 different categories and honored 14 separate, locally produced productions from KCET and PBS SoCal. The locally produced original arts and culture series ARTBOUND received the most nominations with four and resulted in entirely sweeping one of the categories – Arts Programming, ensuring at least one Emmy® win when winners are announced in all 35 categories presented during a ceremony on Saturday, July 24 on Emmys.com.

Previous LA Emmy winner and acclaimed local news program SOCAL CONNECTED was nominated for three awards this year in categories that included Education/Information for the episode “The Fight to Know” and Crime/Social Issues recognizing the efforts of the region’s “Fire Station 9.” Also receiving three nominations was the original environmental series EARTH FOCUS in partnership with the Thomson Reuters Foundation and the Laboratory for Environmental Narrative Strategies (LENS) at UCLA for programs that included a feature-length documentary “The New West and the Politics of the Environment” highlighting the work of Nevada’s legendary Senator Harry Reid. The third season of TENDING NATURE (produced in partnership with the Autry Museum of the American West) was also recognized with three nominations for the series that shines a light on the environmental knowledge of Indigenous Peoples across California.

The new weekly music series IN CONCERT AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL, produced in partnership with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, was nominated in two categories and featured the “best of” live performances at the Bowl’s Summer Concert Series hosted by LA Phil’s Music and Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel. The new documentary POWER & HEALTH produced with support from The California Endowment received two nominations for the film’s exploration of the underlying sociological and economic forces that fundamentally shape public health outcomes.

Single nominations went to THE 61st ANNUAL L.A. COUNTY HOLIDAY CELEBRATION (a co-production with The Music Center in association with CDK Productions), CITY RISING: YOUTH & DEMOCRACY (in partnership with The California Endowment), HOLLYWOOD’S ARCHITECT: THE PAUL R. WILLIAMS STORY, THE FIRST ANGRY MAN, GLOBAL MOSAIC and CALIFORNIA COAST: WITHIN SIGHT, SCENT AND SOUND OF THE OCEAN as well as two informational series I WAS THERE and PROPS IN A MINUTE.
