KCET's Award-Winning Weekly Series 'SOCAL CONNECTED' Asks

'What if They Built an Airport and Nobody Came?'

BURBANK, CALIF - December 1, 2014 - SOCAL CONNECTED, KCET's Emmy® and Peabody®Award-winning series looks at the story behind the San Bernardino International Airport, a new $220 million airport built after Norton Air Force Base was closed in 1994. It has everything - except commercial planes and passengers. How did it get built? Why does most of it sit unused? Reporter Conor Knighton wanders through abandoned terminals, strolls down the empty tarmac and talks to local officials who are determined to bring commercial airlines to the airport and much-needed jobs to the local economy.

This story airs on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at 8 p.m.

This week's SOCAL CONNECTED also features:

Does Your House Have Star Quality? - In Los Angeles, even your house can be a star. Val Zavala looks at the business of renting out homes for commercials, TV shows and movies. But just like an actor, your home will need an agent.

Desert Tortoises for Adoption - In the wild, some desert tortoise species are threatened. Once in captivity, they can't be reintroduced to the wild. So what happens to these homeless reptiles? Reporter Nick Hardcastle meets a tortoise expert who runs an adoption program for hundreds of tortoises, and visits a family who has given "Rocky" a good home. (Based on a story from KCET.org's Rewild.)

Fandango Music on a Mission - California missionaries used music to attract Native Americans and help bridge the cultural gap. The popular fandango brought all the classes and races together on the dance floor. What did fandango sound like? Composer Craig Russell helps make musical history come alive inside the mission at San Luis Obispo. (From KCET's Artbound.)
