Starting today and running throughout the summer months, KCET’s website will publish a new installment of CALIFORNIA COASTAL TRAIL. The series will also be available on Roku and Apple TV.

Additionally, KCET’s social media platforms will post highlight videos every Friday. Join the conversation on KCET’s social media platforms at Facebook.com/KCET28 as well as @KCET on Twitter and Instagram using the #myCAcoast.

CALIFORNIA COASTAL TRAIL debuted last summer and followed the trail from San Diego to San Luis Obispo County, while this summer’s episodes continue up the trail to the north.

The California Coastal Trail, which got its start in a 1972-approved ballot measure, will be some 1,200 miles long once it is completed and always be within sight, sound or smell of the ocean along the state's coast between the Mexican and Oregon borders.

Partially funded by The California Coastal Commission, and presented in partnership with Rigler Creative, CALIFORNIA COASTAL TRAIL will share the state’s picturesque coastlines designed for a wide variety of audiences, including visiting tourists, casual vacationers and seasoned California outdoor enthusiasts.

The schedule* is as follows:

Monterey County:

Big Sur – (Launches 7/6)
Big Sur remains pristine, rugged and remote. A number of challenges still remain in completing the entire 125 miles of this stunning stretch of the California Coastal Trail– from land ownership to legal concerns. Led by Congressman Sam Farr, a group of dedicated locals continue to work towards the trail’s completion.

Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary – (Launches 7/13)
In 1992, then Congressman Leon Panetta authored legislation that established the Monterey
Bay National Marine Sanctuary. This "Serengeti of the Sea" stretches along the Central Coast from San Francisco to Cambria, which encompasses some 6,000 square miles of beaches, tide pools, kelp forests, steep canyons and an abundance of wildlife – from tiny shrimp to playful sea otters and giant blue whales.

Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail – (Launches 7/20)
The Monterey Bay Coastal Recreational Trail runs some 18 miles from the towns of Castroville to Pacific Grove passing through Monterey landmarks such as Fisherman’s Wharf, Cannery Row, the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Downtown.

Santa Cruz County

Santa Cruz Pleasure Point – (Launches 7/27)
Santa Cruz Pleasure Point, known as East Cliff Drive, is one of the newest sections of the California Coastal Trail. After years of erosion, what at first seemed like a problem has recently been transformed into a one-way street for pedestrians, bicycles and cars providing safe and scenic passage. Part of the solution also included maintaining the ocean below as one of California’s best surfing destinations.

Wilder Ranch State Park – (Launches 8/3)
Wilder Ranch State Park was originally a dairy known for its butter. Today it is made up of 7,000 acres of protected land where visitors can step back in time to the late 1800’s and explore California’s early ranching history. Some 35 miles of trails and paths wind up into the scenic Santa Cruz Mountains and along coastal terraces that have remained unchanged for thousands of years.

San Mateo County

Half Moon Bay Coastside Trail – (Launches 8/10)
Half Moon Bay is a tranquil community known for its “small town friendliness.” Half Moon Bay Coastside Trail, initiated by citizen activist John Hernandez, offers sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and access to several beaches, which is regularly traversed by foot, on bike and horseback by residents and visitors.

Devil’s Slide Trail – (Launches 8/17)
Devil’s Slide was considered a treacherous section of Highway 1, plagued by countless
accidents, casualties and road closures since it opened in 1936. Despite the risk of danger, astonishing views of the coastline were a welcome reward for those willing to navigate this narrow and winding highway. When a landslide closed down the road for good in 1995, a group of citizen activists banded together and successfully proposed to turn this 1.2-mile section of road into a segment of the California Coastal Trail. When it re-opened in 2015, the paved multi-use trail featured dedicated lanes for bicyclists, pedestrians and equestrians alike.
