Hena Cuevas Hosts New Edition of One-Minute Video Series ‘Props in a Minute’

Burbank, Calif. – Sept. 25, 2018 – KCET, the nation’s largest independent public television station, announced today--National Voter Registration Day--the return of online voter resource BALLOT BRIEF, a one stop digital destination where Californians can find a selection of videos, articles and explainers that break down what voters can expect to find on their election ballots this season.
One of the highlights of the website is “Props in a Minute,” a series of one-minute video explanations to help voters understand the 11 complex propositions on California’s ballot. Former Univision national correspondent Hena Cuevas runs voters through the key points of each proposition, utilizing fun graphics and easy-to-understand language. Sponsored by Los Angeles’ Sheppard Mullin law firm, each video concludes with what a “yes” or “no” vote will mean. This November’s propositions deal with a wide range of issues including affordable housing, mental health, safe drinking water, rent control and more. Each week through Nov. 6, the explainers will roll out online in both Spanish and English at kcet.org/ballotbrief as well as online at KCRW.com, via presenting sponsor RocktheVote.org and on-air on KCET in Southern California.
Voters can expect 11 statewide measures on the Nov. 6 ballot, including one that would repeal the 2017 fuel tax and vehicle fee increases and make future gas tax increases subject to voter approval. Four of the propositions address housing issues, including one that would overturn a law limiting the use of rent control in California. The number of ballot measures is below average for an even-numbered election year, and the state Supreme Court decided on July 18 to remove the most potentially far-reaching one, Proposition 9, an initiative to split California into three states.
Hena Cuevas is an award-winning, producer/reporter with extensive experience in the United States and Latin America. As a Los Angeles-based national correspondent for Univision, she specialized in long-format, in-depth stories, focusing on California, Mexico and the U.S. She has worked for ABC News (20/20, GMA), the NewsHour (PBS), Yahoo! International and VICE Media, as well as contributed to stations in Spain, Chile, Venezuela, Panama and Bolivia. She has received numerous awards and nominations including an Emmy®, Golden Mike, Imagen Award and the Genesis Award. A Fulbright scholar, Cuevas has a BS from Iowa State University and an MA in International Communication from the University of Minnesota.
