TLC’s Jazz Jennings Featured in “Coming Out: A 50 Year History”
Burbank, Calif. – May 8, 2018 – KCET, the nation’s largest independent public television station, today announced a new special programming lineup to celebrate LGBTQ Pride Month on KCET in Southern California. Three specials will honor National LGBTQ Pride Month and discuss challenging topics including gender identity, coming out and combating hate. Each special explores a variety of stories within the LGBTQ community as well as the barriers they fight to break through every day. Specials begin airing Tues., June 12 at 10 p.m. on KCET in Southern California.
“Coming Out: A 50 Year History” - Tues., June 12 at 10 p.m. (with streaming on kcet.org)
TLC’s transgender teen, Jazz Jennings, narrates this one-hour documentary exploring the history of public gay identity within the LGBT community from the 1950s through today. Watch as young people interview LGBTQ elders who came out in different historical eras and compare and contrast the modern "coming out" experience with people who came out during McCarthy, Civil Rights, post-Stonewall and AIDS eras. They learn that every generation stands on the shoulders of those who came before and that activism must continue even in light of great social strides.
“Denial: The Dad That Tried To Save The World” - Tues., June 19 at 10 p.m.
Denial falls squarely into a long tradition of documentaries that start by examining one subject before an unexpected twist complicates and enriches the initial investigation. Starting out as an important exploration of energy use and abuse, the film soon takes a sharp turn into the politics of gender identity. The energy debate and transgender issues, two thorny topics that at first glance seem miles apart, are ultimately united by the struggles of one man trying to confront issues that most people would prefer to ignore.
“The Year We Thought About Love” - Tues., June 26 at 10 p.m. (with streaming on kcet.org) Boston-based True Colors: OUT Youth Theater transforms daily struggles into performance for social change. With wit, candor and attitude, the cast of characters captivates audiences surprised to hear such stories in school settings. The film introduces a transgender teenager kicked out of her house, a devout Christian challenging his church’s homophobia, and a girl who prefers to wear boy’s clothing even as she models dresses on the runway. When bombs explode outside their building, the troupe becomes even more determined to share their stories of love to help heal their city.
