Los Angeles, Calif. – May 23, 2022 – PBS SoCal and KCET, Southern California’s flagship PBS organizations, announced this morning a total of 4 wins from the 72nd Annual Golden Mike® Awards presented in-person by the Radio & Television News Association (RTNA) of Southern California on Saturday, May 21. PBS SoCal and KCET were honored in Division A categories that included News Reporting, Light Feature Reporting, News Videography and Video Editing. The Golden Mike Awards is the longest running broadcast news awards show in America, and one of the most distinguished because some of the top journalists across America do the judging.

The KCET Original Emmy® award-winning arts and culture series ARTBOUND’s 2021 standalone special called “Arts Education took home top honors in the category of News Reporting for its exploration of the values that arts education provides for all young people and communities, building the foundation for an inclusive and economically vibrant society. ARTBOUND: ARTS EDUCATION was developed in partnership with the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture.

ARTBOUND also took top honors in two other categories (Light Feature Reporting and News Videography) honoring the legacy of trailblazing local graphic designer John Van Hamersveld, the man behind the iconic Endless Summer poster that forever solidified the image of California with its high contrast image of a lone surfer against a day-glo background as well as the short film inspired by an article that first appeared online at kcet.org that spotlighted Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Ellen Reid. Reid created a GPS-enabled work of public art that uses music to illuminate the natural environment, shaping a walk in Griffith Park into something more extraordinary. All of the ARTBOUND honorees’ work can be seen on kcet.org/artbound and on the free PBS video App.

The fourth award in the News Videography of a Feature Story, Series or Special, went to the film POWER & HEALTH, a documentary produced with support from The California Endowment that examines the underlying sociological and economic forces that fundamentally shape public health outcomes where experts reviewed how society’s health and wellness is shaped by inequality and injustice.

The 72nd Annual Golden Mike® Award wins for KCET and PBS SoCal are listed below by category:

BEST LIGHT FEATURE REPORTING, 10 MINUTES OR LESS - ARTBOUND: Endless Summer
