Burbank, Calif. – June 14, 2017 – KCET, the nation’s largest independent public television station, announced today the return of SOCAL CONNECTED with three new environmental specials highlighting environmental progress, environmental justice and the challenge of balancing nature and humans. The summer lineup includes a trip to Joshua Tree National Park, a small farm near Moorpark that goes beyond organic, and a look at the Chiquita Canyon Landfill all in support of KCET’s “Summer of the Environment” initiative. The three specials kick off with “Balancing Act” on Tues., July 11 at 8 p.m. on KCET in Southern California.

SOCAL CONNECTED is an acclaimed weekly half-hour local news magazine series that offers Southern California viewers substantive, in-depth reporting on vital issues that impact the region including race relations, civil rights, technology, transportation and in this case, environmental issues.

The July lineup will telecast on KCET as follows (subject to change):

A look into cutting edge environmental practices at a farm where soil is king and a visit to an incubator for green business entrepreneurs. Then, in a segment from filmmaker/actor Raphael Sbarge (Once Upon a Time, Murder in the First), climate scientist Dr. Jess Adkins from the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering at Caltech reveals what other climatologists are thinking, and offers up inspiring advice on the things that can be done to help.

SOCAL CONNECTED “Environmental Justice” Tues., July 25 at 8 p.m. PT

Exploring environmental justice with a dive into lead-contaminated communities, the effects of the Chiquita Canyon Landfill and an interview with an African-American environmental leader.

The programs will also be available online along with additional resources at kcet.org/socalconnected
