New Documentary Explores How Descanso Gardens Reflects the Evolution of Los Angeles; Part of KCET’s ‘Summer of the Environment’ Initiative
BURBANK, Calif. – June 20, 2017 – KCETLink Media Group, a leading national independent nonprofit public broadcast and digital network, has announced a special summer addition to its history series LOST LA with LOST LA: DESCANSO GARDENS as part of its “Summer of the Environment” initiative. Descanso Gardens, located in La Cañada Flintridge just east of Los Angeles, is a 150-acre botanical garden that welcomes thousands of visitors annually. LOST LA: DESCANSO GARDENS is a documentary that not only explores the natural, year-round beauty of this urban retreat, but reveals its surprising history as one of Southern California's most beloved public gardens. LOST LA: DESCANSO GARDENS airs on Tues., July 18 at 8:30 p.m. on KCET in Southern California and airs on Thurs., July 20 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Link TV nationwide (DirecTV 375 and DISH network 9410). This special summer episode of LOST LA will encore on Sat., July 22 at 6 p.m. and Wed., July 26 at 8 p.m. on KCET.
At one time, this property belonged to newspaper magnate E. Manchester Boddy (1891-1967) who owned the Los Angeles Daily News. From its pre-colonial origins as an oak woodland to its contemporary role as a living museum, the film examines how the Descanso Gardens reflect the social, political, and cultural evolution of Los Angeles.
The LOST LA series is a co-production of KCETLink and the USC Libraries with L.A. As Subject. It brings Southern California history to life by marrying archival materials with innovative forms of documentary storytelling. Hosted by historian Nathan Masters, each episode of LOST LA brings the primary sources of Los Angeles history to the screen in surprising new ways. Much of L.A.’s past is lost to history – but we can rediscover it in the region’s archives.
