KCET TAKES THE (AIR) WAVES WITH SPECIAL PRESENTATION OF "ACCIDENTAL ICON: THE REAL GIDGET STORY" SEPT. 22 AT 9:30 PM
Documentary features the life of Malibu's first surfer girl Kathy Kohner Zuckerman.
Special presentation also includes on-set appearances by Kathy Kohner Zuckerman (the real Gidget), Caryn Richman ("The New Gidget" TV series) and surf legend Lance Carson.
Los Angeles - September 20, 2011 - KCET, the nation's largest independent public television station serving Southern and Central California, hits the (air) waves with a special presentation of "Accidental Icon: The Real Gidget Story" on September 22, 2011 at 9:30 p.m., a documentary featuring the life of Malibu's first surfer girl Kathy Kohner Zuckerman.
The documentary will air as part of a special two-hour presentation that features guests including Kathy Kohner Zuckerman (the real Gidget), Caryn Richman ("The New Gidget" TV series) and surf legend Lance Carson. The show is hosted by Maty Monfort of HGTV's Smart Solutions and television personality Andrew Krasny.
"Accidental Icon: The Real Gidget Story" explores the largely untold story of the real "Gidget," Kathy Kohner Zuckerman. Kathy's account of surfing Malibu in the mid-1950s became the basis for a best-selling novel by her father Frederick Kohner, the hit 1959 movie "Gidget," and 1965 television series starring Sally Field, all of which introduced the modern sport of surfing to a world-wide audience.
In this special, surf legends and present-day "surfer girls" set the stage and take the Gidget story full circle. Prominent actors and directors, many of whom brought Gidget to the big and small screen, provide an enlightening behind-the-scenes perspective. They include: Sally Field, Cliff Robertson, James Darren, Gregory Harrison, Caryn Richardson and Paul Wendkos.
