Holiday Programming Continues on New Year’s Day With Viewer Favorite Original KCET Programming Including ARTBOUND, LOST LA & THE MIGRANT KITCHEN

Burbank, Calif. – Dec. 15, 2016 –KCET, the nation’s largest independent public television station, announced today a special New Year’s Eve programming marathon featuring 15 back-to-back viewer favorite episodes from the last five years of Huell Howser’s iconic series CALIFORNIA GOLD, ROAD TRIP WITH HUELL HOWSER and VISITING WITH HUELL HOWSER. This year-end look back will feature some of the best episodes and viewer’s favorites from Huell’s series over the past five years, featuring signature spots all over California.

Working in partnership with Chapman University, which owns the rights to the Huell Howser Archive since the time of Howser’s death in 2013, Huell Howser produced more than 1,000 episodes of various public television series (including CALIFORNIA’S GOLD WITH HUELL HOWSER and VISITING WITH HUELL HOWSER) over the course of 30 years. KCET will treat Southern Californians to this binge-worthy event to ensure that Howser is forever immortalized through his television series dedicated to preserving the culturally diverse and rich history of California. The special Huell marathon will only air on KCET in Southern California on Sat., Dec. 31 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. PT.

Additionally, a special eight-hour programming block on New Year’s Day, Sun., Jan. 1 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. PT, will celebrate highlights from 2016’s award-winning original series on KCET. Select episodes from the critically acclaimed multi-platform arts and culture series ARTBOUND will be showcased, providing critical in-depth analysis of how the state’s arts and culture affect society and shape California as the creative capital of the world. Also featured in the special lineup is KCET’s regional history series LOST L.A. (produced in partnership with the University of Southern California Libraries), based on original “L.A. as Subject” archival material, and THE MIGRANT KITCHEN, produced in partnership with acclaimed print/online magazine Life & Thyme, and dedicated to exploring Los Angeles’ booming food scene through the eyes of a new generation of chefs.

Starting today as part of LOST LA, KCET.org will launch a “Map Your California” campaign, a user-generated content project in which viewers and readers map their own versions of California. This initiative will kick off by exploring various user-submitted maps of the state of California. All entries will become part of an LA as Subject archival collection, to serve future generations of students, scholars, and cartographers. ROAD TRIP WITH HUELL HOWSER “Solvang” – Sat., Dec. 31 at 10 a.m. PT:

Huell takes a road trip to Solvang, an adventure that includes tasting homemade aebleskivers, visiting the world-famous red shoe and stopping by the authentic Bethania Lutheran Church.

ROAD TRIP WITH HUELL HOWSER “Ridge Route” – Sat., Dec. 31 at 11 a.m. PT:

Huell takes a trip along a 30–mile portion of the abandoned Ridge Route, north of Castaic.

CALIFORNIA’S GOLD “Devil’s Postpile” – Sat., Dec. 31 at 12 p.m. PT:

Huell tours Devil’s Postpile towering 60 feet over the San Joaquin River and looking like a huge cathedral pipe organ built entirely of stone.

CALIFORNIA’S GOLD “Trestle” – Sat., Dec. 31 at 12:30 p.m. PT:

Huell visits the Goat Canyon Trestle built in 1932 and interviews some of the original workers who built the Trestle located on the most treacherous countryside in the US.

CALIFORNIA’S GOLD “Cape Mendocino Lighthouse” – Sat., Dec. 31 at 1 p.m. PT:

Join Huell as he travels to the western-most point in California in search of the Cape Mendocino Lighthouse.

VISITING WITH HUELL HOWSER “Moorten Boanical Garden” – Sat., Dec. 31 at 1:30 p.m. PT:

Moorten Botanical Garden and Cactarium is a historic landmark that first opened its doors in 1938 featuring a desert environment with tours, wildlife and a nursery.

CALIFORNIA’S GOLD “Springtime In Death Valley” – Sat., Dec. 31 at 2 p.m. PT:

Huell goes kayaking on Ancient Lake Manly at Badwater, a lake that only reappears about every 100 years.

CALIFORNIA’S GOLD “Aircraft Carriers” – Sat., Dec. 31 at 3 p.m. PT:

Huell visits two aircraft carriers that are now museums in the waters of California -- USS Midway (used in Desert Storm) and USS Hornet (used in World War II and Apollo II).

CALIFORNIA’S GOLD “Hollywood Sign” – Sat., Dec. 31 at 4 p.m. PT:

Huell visits the iconic Hollywood sign and gets special permission to climb to the top.

VISITING WITH HUELL HOWSER “Joshua Tree Special” – Sat., Dec. 31 at 5 p.m. PT:

Huell sees the world’s tallest, oldest and most peculiar-looking Joshua Trees.

CALIFORNIA’S GOLD “Glacier” – Sat., Dec. 31 at 6 p.m. PT:

Join Huell as he hikes high up in the Eastern Sierra to visit the Conness Glacier in a stunning part of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range.

CALIFORNIA’S GOLD “Golden Gate Bridge” – Sat., Dec. 31 at 6:30 p.m. PT:

California’s most recognized landmark takes center stage in an episode which focuses on its history-including rare footage of its contraction – its beauty and the maintenance work that goes on daily.

CALIFORNIA’S GOLD “Hearst Ranch” – Sat., Dec. 31 at 7 p.m. PT:

The Hearst Ranch is made up of 80,000 acres of cattle ranch surrounding Hearst Castle. Follow Huell to the original Hearst Ranch where he gets a tour and history lesson on the ranch.

CALIFORNIA’S GOLD “Mt. Wilson” – Sat., Dec. 31 at 8 p.m. PT:

Huell spends the day at Mount Wilson Observatory, which now hosts several of the most technologically advanced facilities in the world and is home to the 100-inch Hooker telescope.

CALIFORNIA’S GOLD “Half Dome” – Sat., Dec. 31 at 9 p.m. PT:

Huell climbs Yosemite’s formidable Half Dome, a 17-mile round trip trek, along with other avid hikers, to conquer this 4800-foot high landmark.

ARTBOUND “Fallujah: Art, Healing and PTSD” – Sun., Jan. 1 at 10 a.m. PT:

USMC Sergeant Christian Ellis helped turn his demons of war into FALLUJAH, the first opera composed about the Iraq war. This documentary explores how the experience of war is transformed into a work of art.

ARTBOUND “Hopscotch: An Opera for the 21st Century” – Sun., Jan. 1 at 11 a.m. PT:

ARTBOUND explores the groundbreaking opera HOPSCOTCH, which unfolded in November of 2015 with cars zigzagging throughout Los Angeles, telling a single story of a disappearance across time.

ARTBOUND “MOCA: Beyond The Museum Walls” – Sun., Jan. 1 at 12 p.m. PT:

ARTBOUND goes behind the scenes of the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, investigating new programming and curatorial approaches that are redefining what it means to be a 21st century museum.

LOST LA “Reshaping LA” – Sun., Jan. 1 at 1 p.m. PT:

“Reshaping L.A.” details how the modern metropolis has altered its topography to better suit its needs, visiting the city’s now-defunct hills and tunnels, as well as the vanished canals of Venice Beach.

LOST LA “Wild LA” – Sun., Jan. 1 at 1:30 p.m. PT:

“Wild L.A.” unwraps the complicated relationship between the city and its natural environment exploring the origin of the Santa Ana winds and the demise of the grizzly bear in Southern California.

ARTBOUND “Artesanos” – Sun., Jan. 1 at 2 p.m. PT:

The highly skilled labor of artisans migrating from Mexico and Latin America are the backbone of high-end design and retail in Los Angeles, producing some of the most exquisite furniture, textiles, and design goods.

ARTBOUND “Charles Lummis: Reimagining the American West” – Sun., Jan. 1 at 3 p.m. PT:

This documentary chronicles the life and legacy of Charles Lummis, a Los Angeles icon, who was known to many as a writer and editor of the Los Angeles Times, an avid collector and preservationist, an American Indian rights activist and the founder of LA’s first museum.

ARTBOUND “Third LA” – Sun., Jan. 1 at 4 p.m. PT:

Architectural critic Christopher Hawthorne partners with ARTBOUND to look at the future of Los Angeles by examining its architecture, urban planning, transportation and changing demographics, giving us a glimpse of Los Angeles as a model of urban renewal for the nation and the world.

THE MIGRANT KITCHEN – Sun., Jan. 1 at 5 p.m. PT:

THE MIGRANT KITCHEN explores Los Angeles’ booming food scene through the eyes of a new generation of chefs whose cuisine is inspired by the immigrant experience.
