Vireo Press Materials
More than 20 years ago, composer Lisa Bielawa was inspired by her studies of hysteria to create the opera “Vireo: The Spiritual Biography of a Witch’s Accuser.” The made-for-broadcast work will have its worldwide series debut on KCET in Spring of 2017, with all 12 episodes released at once.
Composed by Bielawa on a libretto by Erik Ehn and directed by Charles Otte, “Vireo” stars soprano Rowen Sabala. The opera is an artist residence project of Grand Central Art Center (GCAC), which is under the helm of director John Spiak.
The Los Angeles River, and the Bowtie Parcel next to it offer a lens through which we can think about how Los Angeles used to be, how it is today, and how it may evolve tomorrow.
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month 2018, KCET will air special programming throughout the month of September and October celebrating Hispanic culture.
