Help Celebrate Women’s History Month in Special KCET Programming
Burbank, Calif. – Feb. 13, 2018 - KCET, the nation’s largest independent public television station, announced today a slate of special programming that celebrates Women’s History Month highlighting the lives and legacies of some of the most influential female leaders and innovators of our time. American aviator Amelia Earhart, combat photojournalist Dickey Chapelle and musician/composer Barbara Borden are all featured in the lineup of documentaries celebrating women who continue to inspire others. This lineup of documentaries that recognize Women’s History Month will begin Tues., March 10 at 10 p.m. on KCET in Southern California.
The lineup will telecast as follows (*subject to change):
BEHIND THE PEARL EARRINGS: DICKEY CHAPELLE - Tues., March 6 at 10 p.m.
This documentary explores Dickey Chapelle's storytelling and her intriguing journey as a combat journalist and photographer, which paved the way for other female war correspondents. She defied the odds and told the story her way.
WOMEN OUTWARD BOUND - Tues., March 13 at 10 p.m.
This special profiles the first group of young women to participate in an Outward Bound survival school course in 1965, and chronicles their experiences in the wild. It also captures how one month in the woods taught them they could do more than they ever thought possible.
KEEPER OF THE BEAT: A WOMAN’S JOURNEY INTO THE HEART OF DRUMMING - Tues., March 20 at 10 p.m.
This award-winning documentary is about the life and music of acclaimed drummer, composer and teacher, Barbara Borden. Filmed on four continents, the film tells Borden's inspiring story through performance, interviews, archival material and excerpts of Borden's autobiographical play, “She Dares to Drum.”
BEYOND THE POWDER: THE LEGACY OF THE FIRST WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY AIR RACE -Tues., March 27 at 10 p.m. (with streaming available on kcet.org)
This documentary follows the female pilots of the 2014 Air Race Classic as they make their way across the country while telling the story of the first women's cross-country air race of 1929, also known as the “Powder Puff Derby” which included Amelia Earhart. The first Women’s Air Derby in 1929 was flown from Santa Monica’s Airport to the finish line in Cleveland, Ohio and kicked off the National Air Races.
