Margaret "Maggie" Ringenberg in Front of Plane

KCET.org/heritage

Burbank, Calif. – Feb. 22, 2017 – KCET, a leading national independent nonprofit public broadcast and digital network, announced today a new line up of documentaries for Women’s History Month that will celebrate and explore the lives and legacies of some of the most influential leaders, innovators, record breakers and servicewomen throughout history. The slate will follow renowned U.S. Army Air Force pilot Margaret “Maggie” Ringenberg, acclaimed criminal defense attorney and art activist Penny Cooper, motorcycle record-holder Laura Klock and finally, the women (or lack thereof) politicians as explored by documentary filmmaker Kiley Lane.

The slate will telecast throughout the month of March as follows:

WINGS FOR MAGGIE RAY - Tues., March 7 at 10 p.m. PT on KCET in Southern California

The documentary film is a tribute to the remarkable life and legacy of Margaret “Maggie” Ringenberg (1921-2008), a U.S. Army Air Force WASP (Women’s Air Service Pilot) and renowned long-distances aviation racer. Re-enactments, archival photos and film, and insightful interviews from those closest to Ringenberg shed light on her fearlessness, confidence, competitive nature, drive and determination. The program covers the Indiana native’s numerous aviation adventures during and after World War II, including ferrying personnel and supplies, test-flying new planes and serving as the lead pilot in global races.

SOLDIER ON: LIFE AFTER DEPLOYMENT - Tues., March 14 at 10 p.m. PT on KCET in Southern California

SOLDIER ON: LIFE AFTER DEPLOYMENT follows three women – Natasha Young, Amanda Tejada and Lyndsey Lyons – as they confront the challenges of readjusting to civilian life after their post 9/11 military service. Upon completion of their tours, the women cope with the similar issues in their relationships, substance abuse, depression, health problems, post-traumatic stress disorder and employment difficulties.

PENNY: CHAMPION FOR THE MARGINALIZED - Tues., March 21 at 10 p.m. PT on KCET in Southern California

Penny Cooper is a celebrated criminal defense attorney, art collector, and supporter of female artists and protector of the underdog. A life brimming with stories mirroring the profound changes in our country from the 1940’s to the present, Cooper proves herself quite the storyteller with seemingly unlimited anecdotes. Through it all, she has found herself at the center of dramatic social progress for women. A role model and pioneer, Cooper perhaps owes much of her success in transcending the glass ceiling to her unwavering resilience, fortitude and infamous humility.

KLOCKED: WOMEN WITH HORSEPOWER - Tues., March 21 at 10:30 p.m. PT on KCET in Southern California

Focusing on female motorcyclist and land speed record-holder Laura Klock and her two daughters, Erika and Karlee Cobb, the three became the first mother/daughter trio in land speed racing history to set records at the same time in 2008. The documentary was shot in the barren and white landscape of the Bonneville Salt Flats.

RAISING MS. PRESIDENT - Tues., March 28 at 10:30 p.m. PT on KCET in Southern California

Filmmaker Kiley Lane explores why more women don’t run for office. Through interviews with elected officials, scholars, high school students and leaders of two non-profits dedicated to raising the next generation of female leaders, the program investigates where political ambition begins and why society should encourage more women to lead since the United States only ranks 97th of 190 countries when it comes to the number of women in elected office.
