California Coastal Trail

Newport Beach: A Lifeguard's Story

Newport Beach Lifeguard Officer Gary Conwell, featured in this video, is spot-on when talking about how the California Coastal Trail allows for more access to the ocean:

I think it allows for a lot of great activity, rather than just having a few people enjoy it that live on the beach. You have people that can travel wherever they want to go. It allows mobility and a lot of fun. Our business is having people at the beach.

Exactly. Access to the coast is not just for those fortunate enough to live near it. It's for all. And that's right in line with the mission of the CCT's parent agency (and partial funder of this series), the California Coastal Conservancy. Here it is codified in state law:

The Legislature finds and declares that it is the policy of the state that the right of the public to access and enjoyment of the coastal resources should be effectively guaranteed.

So go out and enjoy Newport Beach and beyond!
