California's Gold: Newport Boats

Newport Boats

Huell visits Newport Beach to learn about two historic "boats." Family owned since 1919, Balboa Island Ferry has provided continuous service between Balboa Island and Balboa Peninsula.

Huell is off to an evening cruise aboard John Wayne's famous yacht, the Wild Goose. Wayne bought the boat, which was originally a minesweeper in World War II, in 1965 and converted it into a luxury yacht that served as a backdrop for celebrity functions, family vacations, and infamous poker sessions with such luminaries as Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Bob Hope. The last captain of the ship shares some wonderful stories about this historic vessel.

Barns

Before Disneyland, Walt Disney's enthusiasm for realistic model trains had evolved into an elaborate backyard live steam railroad. At the heart of his railroad was a quaint red barn, which was his center of operations. Now at home in Griffith Park in Los Angles, the barn is a gem in the collection of the Los Angeles Live Steamers, an organization of train enthusiasts dedicated to educating people in railroad history and lore, and to further the avocation of live steam, gas-mechanical and electronic railroad technology.

Calaveras County Fair

Huell travels to the Calaveras County Fair & Jumping Frog Jubilee. There is a reason this area is referred to as "Frogtown". In 1865, Samuel l. Clemens (Mark Twain) penned "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", a tall tale of the life and happenings of the gold rush town. When the town was looking for a theme for the fair in 1928, they remembered the story and the first Jumping Frog Jubilee was held on main street, downtown Angels Camp. The event has grown into an internationally known and loved event and is the highlight of the fair.
