About Outpost and Full Dollar

Located at 1268 N. Ave 50 at York Blvd, Outpost's Highland Park headquarters is the meeting ground for this exciting collaborative exchange between visiting artist-in-residence, X. Andrade, and the project's local participants.

Through projects like the Full Dollar Collection of Contemporary Art, Outpost hopes to blur the boundaries between art, social practice, and public life. Our non-profit organization is devoted to building bridges between our local community and the larger global landscape, and does this primarily through our international residency program, which brings X. Andrade and his Full Dollar project to Los Angeles in September.

This photo was taken on opening day of Galería Full Dollar in Guayaquil, Ecuador, March 2004 and shows Full Dollar in its original incarnation: a symbolically appropriated gallery space in an empty building within an urban-renewal area in Guayaquil. The sign was also appropriated and became the collective's namesake and logo.

The Full Dollar Collection of Contemporary Art similarly explores the spaces between anthropology and contemporary art, using appropriation as a way to cast an ethnographic look on the social life of objects, images, and ideas in an urban context.
