Helen Luc - Chinatown Service Center Youth Council Member
Written by student producer Helen Luc
Helen Luc - like most of the children who grow up in Chinatown - was born in the Pacific Alliance Medical Center (PAMC). PAMC has a rich history that dates back to when the city of Los Angeles was no more than a small dusty agricultural community with a population of 1,500. It was founded in 1869 as Los Angeles' first hospital, then called the French Hospital for a growing French community here before New Chinatown was built. Today, it is the main hospital for Chinatown residents, but there is still the landmark statue of Joan of Arc that stands proudly on the front lawn as a reminder of the history of French immigrants living in Los Angeles at the time.
"The Pacific Alliance Medical Center is a big part of Chinatown because most of the younger generation was born here."
