Don't Let Go

P.C. Joe Penhale is desperate to keep Maggie and show her he's changed; that he's the macho husband she wants. But Maggie plans to return to Bude. Penhale resorts to desperate measures to convince her to stay, including surreptitiously paying people to be nasty to her so he can step in and assert his authority, and show her he can be tough. Aunt Ruth uncovers a chest of family heirlooms when she clears out a barn at the farm, including photos as Martin as a six-year-old schoolboy. The photos bring back poignant memories of an unhappy childhood for Martin and it prompts him to think of registering their son for boarding school. But Louisa is horrified at the thought of sending him miles away to school. Tension is mounting between Louisa and Martin. They can't seem to agree on anything. The final straw for Louisa comes when she discovers Martin has set a date for their baby's christening without even consulting her. Louisa decides she has had enough. She packs a bag, and takes the baby back home to her mum.

Control-Alt-Delete

Martin reaches his breaking point with being followed around by Buddy: he resolves to find a vet to have him put down. Morwenna, and eventually Louisa, manage to persuade him that it isn't quite that simple - a vet will not put down a healthy dog just on Martin's say-so. They intervene and find a new home for Buddy with Angela Sim, a local vet, though Martin will have to take him there himself. Martin is not impressed by Angela's alternative approaches to medicine, even if it is veterinary medicine, but at least he has managed to offload Buddy onto her.

Other People's Children

Martin and Louisa don't seem to be having much success with their therapy, so Dr. Timoney advises that they should try and take things back to the beginning of their relationship, and plan a date, and try not to let their busy lives get in the way, even though Louisa is also trying to plan James Henry's first birthday party.

Facta Non Verba

After Martin and Louisa tell Dr. Timoney about their failed date night, she questions their ultimate compatibility. She asks them if it is time they recognize that perhaps they are not meant to be together: something for them to go and think about. Martin has new neighbors: Erica the new Art Teacher at Portwenn school has moved in with her daughter, Bernie. Though Louisa is happy to finally have found a permanent teacher, this proves to be short lived when Erica wants to try out some rather alternative ideas on the children.

The Doctor Is Out

As we reach the final episode in Series 7, Martin finds himself in a very unusual situation: trapped by Annie Winton, who desperately wants him to try and save her husband, Jim Winton, despite Jim having been recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. Annie insists that there must be something that Martin can do to help. Meanwhile, Ruth and Bert have a proposition to put to Al, regarding the whisky and the B&B. Louisa is very worried about Martin, and wonders if the breakdown of their therapy could have led him to decide to leave Portwenn for good.
