District 15 | One Word Salwamem | Tule Elk: The Killing of a Native Species

Communities for a Better Environment does critical work on environmental justice and empowers Californian communities to stand up to polluting industries and build a green energy future. "District 15" highlights the hope and tenacity of the young activists of Wilmington, California as they push the Los Angeles City Council to prohibit new and existing oil and gas drilling operations within 2,500 feet of homes, schools and hospitals.

For the Winnemem Wintu people, Sawalmem means "sacred water." It represents a vital vision for healing the world and for healing from the legacy of the Shasta Dam that, since the 1940s, has harmed salmon, the Sacramento River and the people of Shasta Mountain, California.

"Tule Elk: The Killing of a Native Species" explores the battle over Point Reyes National Seashore, where one third of the land—some 18,000 acres—are dedicated to the exclusive use of two dozen ranchers. Their 6,000 cattle outnumber the native Tule elk in the park 10 to 1.
