Interview with Tom Teller, Director of Hum
Tom Teller's short animated film "Hum" was the winner of the 2017 Fine Cut Film Festival Jack Larson Southern California Student Filmmaker Award.
Biography:
Tom grew up in Bend, Oregon where he found his passion for storytelling before moving to southern California to pursue film. He is entering his senior year at Chapman University's Dodge College of Film and Media arts emphasizing in directing and visual effects production. Tom is currently a 2015 Student Academy Award finalist for his animated short, "Hum" and has spent the last four years directing narrative shorts, animation, and the feature length documentary "The Rise of Enduro".
The Interview:
Do you think filmmaking is important for society?
Tom Teller: I think filmmaking and storytelling in general are critical aspects of society. Filmmaking, music, art, all of these art forms allow for expression, escape, and entertainment.
What do you hope an audience takes away from your film?
TT: I hope the audience longs more for the unknown after seeing Hum. The goal of the film was to depict the beauty of the world beyond and pursuing it with a little help from a friend.
How did you finance the film?
TT: The film was self-funded with a budget of $2000.
