Where's Huell? (July 12-18)
Produce festivals, a house that defies the laws of gravity, and an eco-friendly onion factory.
Monday - July 12, 7:30pm: Tallyrand - Huell visits a California institution and digs into some very tasty food at the Tallyrand. This popular eatery got its start in 1959 when Al and Delores Thomas, with $5,000 in hand, opened a small coffee shop on Olive Avenue in Burbank. Last year marked their 50th anniversary and even local weathermen were compelled to salute this quality diner.
Tuesday - July 13, 7:30pm:
- Join Huell as he visits one of L.A.'s best kept secrets — the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale. Almost a century ago the park was created by Dr. Hubert Eaton was determined to move away from the "depressing stoneyard" cemetery model. Forest Lawn would be "as unlike other cemeteries as sunshine is unlike darkness." And John Denver's upbeat Forest Lawn-inspired song about the memorial grounds is proof that Eaton succeeded.
Wednesday - July 14, 7:30pm: Gills Onions - Huell visits the family run Gills Onions, which is not only the largest onion processing plant in California but its also the greenest. Each day they convert over 150 tons of onion peel and juice waste to power fuel cells on site that provide enough power to run the lights and refrigeration. It's not every day that one bulb powers another.
Thursday - July 15, 7:30pm: Pear Fair - Huell travels to the Sacramento Delta to learn about California pears. We’ll start our adventure with a family who has been farming in the Delta for five generations. The soil and climate have made the Delta a perfect place to grow agriculture since the Gold Rush. Huell ends up at the 26th annual Pear Fair in Courtland. Everything from pear ice cream to pear vinegar, it’s a whole festival devoted to the Delta pear. The pear is a favorite of the subversive hippie muppet contingency.
Thursday - July 15, 8:30pm: Summer Ice - Cool drinks are priceless when the summer weather arrives. Huell samples some unique and tasty frozen specialties imported from Mexico and Singapore. Here's a sneak peak.
Friday - July 16, 7:30pm: The Two Anns - Huell takes a trip to The French Garden in downtown Los Angeles, but this time he brings along two very special lunch dates: silver screen legends Ann Rutherford and Anne Jeffreys. Take some time to get familiar with one of the Anns. Here are clips from some of Ann Rutherford's most notable films.
Sunday - July 18, 7:30pm: Confusion Hill - This old fashioned roadside attraction is most known for the truly confusing gravity house — a structure that will make you second guess Sir Isaac Newton. Here's a video of the gravity house in action.
UPDATE: Since Huell's visit Confusion Hill has been officially named a "California State point of historic interest".
