Where's Huell? (June 12-20)
Fermenting cabbage, taxidermy, and telescopes. Just a typical week in the life of Huell Howser. Monday - June 14, 7:30pm: Sauerkraut - In 1896 the Kruegermann family started making pickles in Germany. The family immigrated to California in 1965 with their secret family recipes for not only pickles but sauerkraut as well. Huell spends the day with this wonderful family at their 25,000-foot facility and learns all about the art of sauerkraut. Okay. So this film doesn't have anything to do with sauerkraut. But it does have to do with fermenting — the same process used to make sauerkraut. This time-lapse of fermenting beer, might make you think twice before ordering a tall one the next time you hit the bars.
Tuesday - June 15, 7:30pm: Food Bank - Huell tours the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank. Pasadena resident, Tony Collier, founded Los Angeles Regional Foodbank in 1973 at the Grandview Foundation. Originally operating out of a two-car garage, the Foodbank's current facility is a 96,000 square foot facility specifically designed to serve as a food bank. Huell had a few thoughts to share after his tour of this impressive organization.
Wednesday - June 16, 7:30pm: Whitewater Preserve - Huell visits the Whitewater Preserve located just off the 10 freeway right outside of Palm Springs. This 2,851 acre oasis is surrounded by the Bureau of Land Management San Gorgonio Wilderness and is part of the Wildlands Conservancy’s 33,000-acre Sand to Snow Preserve System. Adjacent to the preserve is the Pacific Crest Trail. Its rich and varied terrain is captured in a series of snapshots strung together, covering hundreds of miles of our state.
Thursday - June 17, 7:30pm: Elvis House - Huell visits the Presley Estate in Palm Springs and gets a tour of one of the very few houses that Elvis actually owned. It's a rare peek inside the 5100 sq. ft. mansion known as Graceland West. This episode doesn't have much to do with Vegas, but that doesn't mean we can't listen to a little Viva Las Vegas to get us in the mood.
Friday - June 18, 7:30pm: Diorama - Huell visits the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County to discover the history of its famous animal dioramas. Robert Reid, who has been the resident artist for 20 years at the Los Angeles Natural History Museum, created these beautiful dioramas with the help of Tavidermist Tim Bovard. If you've never been to the Natural History Museum, someone was kind enough to film the dioramas that fill the North America Mammal Hall.
Saturday - June 19, 7:30pm: Farallon Islands - A group of islands 27 miles off the coast of San Francisco, the Farallon Islands are known as California's Galapagos. Huell spends the day with the biologists who live on the islands, and learns about its flora and fauna. In addition to its wildlife, the islands were also the site of Col Stewart Evans' 1967 historic 25+ mile swim from the Farallon Islands to the California mainland. Sunday - June 18, 7:30pm: Mt. Wilson - Founded in December 1904 by George Ellery Hale, Mount Wilson Observatory would quickly rise to dominate astronomy worldwide. The Observatory hosts several of the most technologically advanced facilities in the world and is home to the 100-inch Hooker telescope. In this one-hour special, Huell spends the day at this magnificent location that is not only historic, but plays an important role in California’s scientific research. Just how impressive are the Observatory's telescopes? Very.
