Sacred Place of Tibetan Buddhism - Ralung Monastery, China

The great Ralung Monastery of Tibetan Buddhism is located in a gorge at the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau at an altitude of 4,000 meters. Foreign media access is tightly restricted and the monastery lies largely hidden from the outside world. It is home, however, to 20,000 practicing monks, nuns and trainees, and more than 50,000 faithful arrive each year for the autumn festival. The winters are harsh with temperatures dropping to minus 36 Celsius, but the observances continue from dawn 'til dusk. NHK recorded a year and a half in the life of the Ralung Monastery, including scenes of the famous sky burial ritual that's so deeply rooted in the Tibetan Buddhist concept of human existence.
