Almost with the dawn of civilization, rulers recognized that workers who were injured on the job deserved compensation. But that idea was almost lost during the European middle ages, and by the time of the Industrial Revolution, workers - who were being maimed and killed by the thousands - had few rights and even less legal recourse.
