Orange County's Not-So 'Great Park'?
Funding for Orange County's Great Park has run into trouble. The bad economy hurt and critics say the money has been misused. Correspondent Jennifer London speaks with Irvine City Council members about how the money was spent, whether it was misappropriated and what the prospects are moving forward. Then, California leads the nation in students who pursue U.S. residency through The DREAM Act. Correspondent Laurel Erickson profiles two local students who have benefitted from one arm of the legislation, DACA (Deferred Amnesty for Childhood Arrival) as well as some local residents who oppose the bill. Next we explore the nature of love and geographical desirability in Los Angeles in "Eastside/Westside."
On any given night, 47,000 men, women, and children live on the streets of Los Angeles – sleeping in tents, cars, on sidewalks, and in emergency shelters. The enormity of the homeless crisis led SoCal Connected to ask the difficult questions: How do we create more affordable housing? Are we willing to pay for critical services such as mental health counseling, medical care, job training, and alcohol/drug rehab programs? With limited resources available, how do we decide who gets helped first? And how do we prevent more people from ending up on the streets every day?
