Meredith Kirkland opened up to Steve Lopez in our military wives roundtable discussion. But that's not her only outlet. Listen to a song she wrote for her husband, Marine Staff Sgt. Matthew Kirkland, while he was deployed overseas. Lyrics are below.

Meredith Kirkland and her family

A Hero

Tucked our little boy in bed tonight, kissed his cheek and watched him close those big blue eyes.
As I turned to walk away, I heard the sweetest voice start to pray.
Dear Lord, keep my daddy safe while he's at war.
Help me be a big boy help me to be strong.
I know he's coming back, it won't be that long.
I felt the tears start to well up in my chest, that's when I turned to him and said.

Your daddy is a hero,
He fights this war.
He can hold his head up high,
just like those who came before.
Your daddy is a soldier though some may not agree.
He does it for them,
just like he does for me.
So when you lay your head down at night you know.
Your daddy is a hero.

Went into our room to climb in our empty bed.
Only thoughts of us running through my head.
I'm trying to be strong,
and I'm going to be brave.
As I bow my head this is what I pray.
Dear Lord, keep my husband safe while he's at war.
Help me be a good wife help me to be strong.
I know he's coming back, it won't be that long.
Even as the tears start to roll down my face.
I'm thankful I can say.

My husband is a hero,
He fights this war.
He can hold his head up high,
just like those who came before.
My husband is a soldier though some may not agree.
He does it for them,
just like he does for me.
So when I lay my head down at night I know.
My husband is a hero.

They're our brothers and our sisters,
Our husbands and our wives.
The ones that are forgotten,
who made that sacrifice.

We're free because of heroes,
who fight this war.
Who risk their lives,
just like those who came before.
We're free because of soldiers,
even if you don't agree.
They do it for you,
just like they do for me.
So when you lay head down tonight you know.
You're free because of heroes.
