Yes Virginia, There Is a SoCal Conservative Internet
Californians have a long tradition of supporting Democratic presidents and progressive causes, but the blogosphere is full of local conservatives and libertarians weighing in on Proposition 8. First up, Red County blogger Jubal offers what seems to be standard non-religious defense of Prop. 8: natural law.
Libertarians Should Support Proposition 8 [T]he United States' founding principles spring from the natural law, which holds nature -- the world, creation, etc -- has an order and purpose we can know intuitively and by use of our reason -- the "self-evident truths" and aforementioned "laws of Nature and of Nature's God" of the Declaration of Independence. The natural law is universal and eternal, hence the Declaration's statement that "all Men" are created equal and "endowed by their Creator" with unalienable rights. The point of this discourse is that the nature of marriage also flows from the same natural law on which our form of government rests. Throughout history and across cultures, marriage has been between a man and a woman. Granted, marriage has not always worn a monogamous form, but even in cultures where polygamy is tolerated or even the norm, marriage itself is the union of man and woman. [Full Story]
California Conservative reports another common meme - gay men voting "yes" on Prop. 8. In this case, the vote is a protest against "continuous goading" of religious communities by gay activists.
The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence have long made a practice of mocking the Catholic Church in general and religious women (nuns) in particular.I find this type of action deeply offensive and disrespectful. Can someone from my own damn community explain how I can “justify” this type of behavior to my family, friends, or my partner’s Catholic family? While many in San Francisco and West Hollywood (and certainly the Sisters themselves) finds this amusing, my family, my partner’s family, and others do not. [full story]
Blogger GayPatriot ("the Internet home for the American gay conservative") has to reluctantly chime in to remind us that most gay men, even conservative gay men, will be voting "no" on Prop. 8. In GayPatriot's case, the reasons are largely procedural:
While I have some concerns with the campaign against the initiative and have some sympathy for the arguments of some of its proponents, I plan on voting “No” on 8 next Tuesday.I want to see the state Supreme Court decision mandating gay marriage overturned. At the same time, I don’t want the traditional definition of marriage enshrined in the state Constitution. But, the only way to overturn that decision is to amend the constitution. We can’t achieve one without the other. [...] Simply put, I don’t believe it’s the province of the judiciary to decide the qualifications for marriage in a particular state. That responsibility belongs to the legislature and, here, in the Golden State given our liberal initiative policies, to the people. In 2000, the people voted overwhelmingly to define marriage as the union of one man and one woman (Proposition 22). Fewer than five years later, the California legislature voted to recognize gay marriage. Instead of defying the people they served, our legislators should have referred the matter back to them, asking citizens to repeal 22. In some ways, I see Proposition 8 as our chance to weigh in on 22. I vote “No” on 8, as I would have voted “Yes” to repeal 22. [full story]
Several conservative bloggers (including NRO Corner blogger and LA Times op-ed columnist Jonah Goldberg) noted a murder-suicide involving involving Huffington Post blogger Carol Anne Burger. Burger stabbed her lesbian lover to death 222 times with a screwdriver before committing suicide in Florida this week , but Young Conservatives of California blogger Ryan Sorba made the implicit explicit by directly linking the tragedy to liberalism, homosexuality and Prop. 8:
It should be noted that anyone refusing to live in accord with their nature as a human being will develop a devestating [sic] kind of loneliness, just like these women did, because they are detached from reality.
One-time porn-gossip kingpin and Jewish convert Luke Ford likely summed up the conservative blogoshpere when he observed, "The more rooted you are in Judaism and Christianity and Islam, the more likely you are to vote for Proposition Eight.
