Criminal Justice Reform ‘Poster Child’ | Mar. 15
On the March 15 episode of SoCal Update, Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón has launched an ambitious slate toward criminal justice reform. KPCC Reporter Robert Garrova has the story of a South L.A. man who says he is the poster child for this sentence review, after being in prison for 36 years
Reginald Wheeler was convicted of kidnapping for robbery in 1985. The crime involved 14 dollars in cash and a watch. No one was hurt. But he was sentenced to 8 years to life and 36 years later, he’s still in California state prison. He says this is a classic case of the punishment not fitting the crime and his family is lobbying Gascón on his behalf.
