SoCal Update

Free Rides for L.A. Metro Commuters | Mar. 1

On the March 1 episode of SoCal Update, Los Angeles County’s transit agency considers plans for a free transit system for most riders. KPCC Reporter Ryan Fonseca explains how it would work.

After exploring ways to transition to a free-free system since September 2020, Metro has proposed a two-phase pilot program. Beginning in January 2022, Metro would give free rides to low-income L.A. county residents, or about 70% of current riders. The second phase would expand free rides to L.A. County students in grades K-12 later in the year.
