A college student was killed Monday afternoon when he jumped into a pool of water at a popular cliff jumping spot in the Angeles National Forest, according to the L.A. County Sheriff's Department. He was part of a group of 13 students hiking in the forest to Hermit Falls, north of Arcadia.

From Yelp to YouTube to Instagram, Hermit Falls is often cited as a great spot for cliff jumping. It is easily accessed with a short hike.

"The victim was the sixth person [in the group] to jump," explained Sgt. Rich Pena. "After the victim jumped, he appeared on the surface but appeared to be unconscious. Several people from the group pulled the victim from the water and began CPR."

The victim was airlifted to Huntington Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Pena said. His name was not released pending notification of next of kin, coroner's officials said.
