Outdoors Briefs: Park & Pool Grand Openings Across the Southland
Quick outdoor updates from around the Southland.
Los Angeles: Lincoln Park in the city's eastside has received seven new upgrades, which will be introduced to the public on Tuesday. They include a new asphalt basketball court, fitness equipment, a skate plaza, a lakeside walkway and an ornate historical gateway that was once the entry to the first L.A. Zoo.
Los Angeles: A new equestrian facility opened in the city's northwest valley last week. Aliso Canyon, the understood border between the city neighborhoods of Porter Ranch and Granada Hills, is now home to a new parking area for equestrian trailers and vehicles. Also included is a riding ring, meadow acres, walking paths, a hitching posts, picnic tables, a bike rack and other amenities. The canyon's trail hooks into a system of interconnected equestrian trails across the area.
Palmdale: City officials cut the ribbon on the grand opening of Foothill Park this weekend. The space next to a housing track features a multipurpose ball field, tot lot play areas with shaded structures, picnic areas with BBQ grills, a lighted walking path with benches and a restroom facility.
Palm Desert: A new eight-acre aquatic center is set to open at the end of this month. It will feature three pools, diving boards, slides, play features and a 7,000-square-foot main building containing multiple changing rooms, offices, and a concession stand. The main feature is a lighted 50-meter by 25-yard Olympic-sized competition pool that is 15 ½ feet deep and equipped with one- and three-meter diving boards. There will also be a 1,600-square-foot recreation pool featuring two looping waterslides and a wade-in entry, as well as play and splash pool for children. The grand opening is scheduled for June 25th.
Glendale: The long-awaited Pacific Park Public Pool finally opened last Saturday. Since the demolition of the city's municipal pool in 2003, residents have had to look to local high schools for water recreation access. When approved by the city council last year, the Glendale News-Press described it as a "six-lane pool configured into an L shape ranging in depth from 2 feet to 10 feet."
