Ski Season Begins: An Early Opening for Mountain High
Operators at Mountain High were hoping to open this Sunday or Monday, but it appears enough snow from both nature and its large reservoir-to-snowmaking system afforded them an even earlier opening with five-hours of open slopes that began at noon today. One lift and three trails are currently open.
Temperatures in the area will stay mostly consistent over the next five days with highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s (Sunday will be the coldest when more, but not a lot, snow is expected to fall), according to the National Weather Service. Beginning Thursday, day times highs will increase to the mid-50s.
Wrightwood is a 70-mile drive from downtown Los Angeles when taking the scenic Angeles Crest Highway, but drivers should monitor road conditions as sometimes chains are required (and Caltrans traditionally doesn't plow a major portion at a certain point in the winter, effectively closing this route). Many, however, prefer arriving to the resort via the 15 Freeway.
