As I hinted last week, the announcement for the annual bicycle takeover of Yosemite National Park's Tioga Road, a precursor to the artery's opening to vehicles after all the snow is plowed, would happen last-minute. So here it is: Bicycle-only access will happen this weekend between 6 a.m. Saturday, April 19 and sunset on Sunday, April 20.

The information was quietly posted to the park's snow plowing update webpage this afternoon.

About 25 miles of Tioga Road will be accessible from Crane Flat to the May Lake junction. Conditions permitting, access may end up even farther up the road. Officials warn cyclists that they could encounter debris and will most definitely will find facilities, like bathrooms, closed.

Tioga is the only road that allows for travel into the park from California's east side. It closes annually when snow builds up.

Several other roads near Yosemite reopened this week.
