This week’s events focus on music and history. Learn about the history of Indian spices and how they’ve made their way into dishes like tikka masala. Reflect on the life and death of Emmett Till through a livestreamed reading. Appreciate L.A.’s jazz past and future by attending the Leimert Park jazz festival. Or listen to tunes at concerts by veteran rockers Los Lobos and relative newcomer Gavin Turek.

Thursday, Aug. 27 from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

The Ballad of Emmett Till

The original director and cast of the Fountain Theatre’s award-winning 2010 production of “The Ballad of Emmett Till" reunite for a livestreamed reading of the play on Friday, Aug. 28. Written by Ifa Bayeza, the play recounts the death of Emmett Till, who was visiting relatives in Money, Mississippi in 1955, when he was accused of whistling at Carolyn Bryant, a white woman who was a cashier at a grocery store. Bryant's husband Roy and his half-brother kidnapped Till, beat him and shot him in the head. The men were tried for murder, but an all-white, male jury acquitted them. Till’s death spurred the Civil Rights movement, and Bryant recanted her story in 2017. The reading takes place at the Fountain Theatre’s website on the 65th anniversary of Till’s murder. Tickets are $20.
