Huell Howser with Poppies

Pig Ears

When Huell's bartender at Musso & Frank Grill tells him how much he liked to eat pig ears as a child, Huell decides to try the culinary treat himself. He first stops by Gaytan Foods to see a Latin spin on how the ears are prepared. He then meets up with Ruben (from Musso & Frank) at Durango Restaurant, where they cook the meat like his mom used to. Lastly, he samples a gelatinous Asian delicacy at the Chung King Restaurant.

Abalone Farm

Huell travels to the Central Coast to visit an abalone farm. For years, Californians could pluck these mollusks off the rocks at low tide. However, overfishing and pollution has led to their decline. The Abalone Farm Inc. in Cayucos has been growing and selling the edible sea snails since 1968. Huell also goes to a local cafe to sample some farm-raised abalone.

Lute Fisk

It seems the most unlikely food to build a celebration around, but Huell partakes in the annual Scandinavian rite of passage -- Lutefisk. At the Sons of Norway Lodge in Van Nuys, Huell watches as members transform smelly, dried, leathery fish into a warm entree. Luckily for some members, there are Swedish meatballs, Norwegian bread, and sweets in addition to the fish.

Huell takes a special tour of Forrest Ackerman's home, which was a shrine to and museum of horror memorabilia. The self-described coiner of the term "sci-fi," Dr. Ackula (as he liked to be called) boasted over 300,000 collectibles from books, genre films, and TV shows. He was also a literary agent and editor of numerous fanzines. Sadly, Ackerman passed away in 2008 so the museum is no longer operational.
