Aging Hand, Young Hand

Surviving Caregiving

As the oldest of five siblings, Algerine Correia, 64 years old, always knew she would be the one to care for her parents when they were elderly. Several years ago, when it became clear that Manuel, now 92, and Anita, now 88, could no longer remain in their home, Algerine moved them into her house. She transformed two rooms that had been her children's bedrooms into a den and bedroom for her parents. She also remodeled a bathroom, added grab bars and a walk-in shower and built a ramp at the front door to make access easier and safer. Despite the burdens, Algerine has learned that she cannot sacrifice taking care of herself as she takes care of her parents. She continues to run her art glass business from home, and makes time weekly to see friends and frequent an online dating site. She credits much of her ability to manage both worlds to her weekly caregivers support group.
