Camping in Glendale? City Studying Locations

When it comes to the great outdoors, Glendale does not exactly come to one's mind. What some may not realize, however, is that L.A. County's fourth largest city is home to around 5,000 acres of open space.

"We feel there's a need for the youth to get out and enjoy the outdoors, not only for their physical well being, but also their mental well being," explained Jeff Weinstein, the city's Trails and Open Space Specialist, who next week will hold two public meetings to gather input from residents on the plan.

Glendale's stock of open space includes approximately 3,000 acres in the Verdugo Mountains (that doesn't include the portions within the cities of Burbank and Los Angeles), 1,200 acres in the San Rafael Hills and 709 acres at Dukmejian Park. Within those parks, there are 37 miles of trails, mostly in the Verdugos.

Weinstein said there are many more decisions to be made, such as deciding what kind of facilities campsites will have (fire rings, shade structures, benches, etc). About 25 possible locations have been identified, including one at Brand Park, but there could be more. "Maybe the community has ideas beyond the 25 sites," he said. "There could be some hidden gems out there."
