Thursday, October 27
UCLA's LA Rebellion: Creating a New Black Cinema screening series continues this week. Tonight, come see two shorts by Ben Caldwell - Medea from 1973 and I & I: An African Allegory from 1979 - along with Haile Gerima's Child of Resistance from 1972. Tomorrow night, the films continue with work by Jamaa Fanaka and Bernard Nicolas. Tonight's screening begins at 7:30, and filmmaker Ben Caldwell will be in attendance.

Friday, October 28
Filmmobile and GHOULA will present a show called Haunted Films in Haunted Places tonight at 8:00 p.m. featuring Buster Keaton in The Haunted House, from 1921, and Harold Lloyd in Haunted Spooks. Erik Hietter will offer live musical accompaniment. GHOULA stands for Ghost Hunters of Urban Los Angeles, which is a social club dedicated to the preservation of LA's rich haunted history. The Filmmobile screens films at various places around the city, for free. Check the website for location details.

The Echo Park Film Center promises to teach you how to shoot and hand-process 16mm footage in a workshop starting at 12:30 p.m. taught by Eve LaFountain. No previous experience necessary!

Filmforum presents Distributing the Avant-Garde: The Creative Film Society, another show in the expansive series titled Alternative Projections: Experimental Film in Los Angeles, 1945 - 1980. With a focus on distribution, and specifically the amazing work collected and presented by the Creative Film Society, which was founded in 1957, the screening includes The Towers, a portrait of the Watts Towers by William Hale made in 1957, as well lots of great animation, including work by James Whitney, Flora Mock and Sara Petty. Angie Pike, the owner of CFS, will be present; the screening begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Spielberg Theatre at the Egyptian Theatre.

The Goethe Institut presents Kinder Kino,featuring two German films for kids. The first is Winter's Daughter, about a young girl searching for her father, and the second is The Gruffalo, a 30-minute animated adaptation of the great book of the same title. The films start at 10:00 a.m.

In honor of Halloween and the conclusion of its Tim Burton show, LACMA presents Price-a-Thon 100!, featuring a screening of six classic Vincent Price movies. Burton greatly admires Price, who would have been 100 years old this year. The selected films include The Pit and the Pendulum, which kicks off the series at 1:00 p.m., as well as The Tingler and The Fly.

Amazing animators Suzan Pitt and Jim Trainor will present new and recent work in a show aptly titled A Conversation in Light and Darkness.Curators Steve Anker and Berenice Reynaud find "haunting correspondences" among the films by the two very different artists, both of whom grapple with serious themes, but fully through their mind-blowing imagery.

California’s First Carbon Capture Project: Vital Climate Tool or License to Pollute?

California’s first attempt to capture and sequester carbon involves California Resources Corp. collecting emissions at its Elk Hills Oil and Gas Field, and then inject the gases more than a mile deep into a depleted oil reservoir. The goal is to keep carbon underground and out of the atmosphere, where it traps heat and contributes to climate change. But some argue polluting industries need to cease altogether.
