Media Arts Preview: Video, Music, Painting, Performance & More
Artists and curators mix film, video, live music, painting and performance this week in events that shake up expectations about watching movies.
Filmmaker and archivist Ross Lipman presents a series of short video portraits accompanied by live music titled "Personal Ethnographies" tonight at the Echo Park Film Center at 8:00 p.m. The videos are depictions of various friends and colleagues, including many independent filmmakers, as well as depictions of specific LA locations. Live music will be performed by Laura Steenberge, the Here and Now (aka Echo Park Film Center's own Lisa Marr and Paolo Davanzo), and John Shaw!.
San Francisco-based artist Clare Rojas returns to LA with a show at Prism featuring a site-specific installation that continues her investigation of "domestic abstract interiors," using painting, installation and video.

UCLA's celebration of Iranian Cinema comes to a close this weekend with a final showcase of two new feature films. The award-winning narrative feature Gesher, by Vahid Vakilfar, chronicles the lives of migrant workers in the Persian Gulf region, and will screen tonight at 7:00 p.m. Tehran Tehran, by Mehdi Karampour and Dariush Mahjul, screens Sunday night at 7:30 p.m.
REDCAT's show this week is titled The Artist Theater Program: A Group Show of Film and Video Work by Visual Artists. Curator Erika Vogt describes the screening as an experiment in that it places video art, often seen in a gallery setting, in front of an audience in a theatrical venue. "It is a chorus of parts that includes moving parts, speaking parts, skeletal parts, muscle parts, parts for the eyes, parts for the senses, parts for thought, and parts for the imagination," she writes. The screening includes work by Math Bass, Lucy Raven, Madison Brookshire and Tashi Wada, among others. The show starts at 8:00 p.m.
The Hammer Museum's Open Projector Night returns with the Sklar Brothers acting as MCs. Bring work under 10 minutes - submissions begin at 7:00 p.m., and there's free popcorn and a cash bar.
