High Fire Danger Prompts Restrictions in Los Padres National Forest

A combination of weather and dryness has prompted officials in Los Padres National Forest to raise the fire danger level to the fourth highest level out of six. That's the "Very High" orange marking on fire danger signs seen throughout the forest.

That level of danger means a number of restrictions go into effect today. Of note to campers is the prohibition of wood and charcoal fires, even at the 70 or so campsites that run up and down the forest between Big Sur and Ventura classified as "Campfire Use." However, free California Campfire Permits can be downloaded and used at those sites for portable stoves and lanterns using gas, jellied petroleum, or pressurized liquid fuel. Smoking is also restricted unless within an enclosed vehicle, building, or Campfire Use Site.

Hunting, combustion engines, and fireworks (duh) restrictions also apply during this time.
