'A Private War' Opens the Winter 2018 KCET Cinema Series
Following a screening of “A Private War,” director/producer Matthew Heineman and screenwriter/co-producer Arash Amel attended a Q&A hosted by Cinema Series host Pete Hammond. Matthew Heineman's film chronicles the life and work of legendary war correspondent Marie Colvin, portrayed on screen by Rosamund Pike. The drama is based on the 2012 Vanity Fair article "Marie Colvin’s Private War" by Marie Brenner and follows the journalist for The Sunday Times as she jeopardizes her life in pursuit of the truth on the front lines of wars and conflicts around the globe. The cast includes Jamie Dornan ("The Fall," "Fifty Shades of Grey"), Stanley Tucci ("The Lovely Bones," "Spotlight") and Tom Hollander ("The Night Manager").
Matthew Heineman is an Academy Award®-nominated and Emmy Award®-winning filmmaker who has twice won the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary Award from the Directors Guild of America, one of only three directors to win the prestigious honor twice.
Heineman is known for his work on "The Trade," "City of Ghosts," "Cartel Land," which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and won three Emmy Awards, "City of Ghosts," "Escape Fire: The Fight To Rescue American Healthcare" and collaborated on the Emmy-nominated HBO series "The Alzheimer's Project."

Arash Amel is an Emmy-nominated feature film and television screenwriter and producer. His script "Grace Of Monaco" made the 2011 Black List and garnered Amel his first Emmy nomination after Nicole Kidman starred in the 2014 film. His adaptation of the novel "Seducing Ingrid Bergman" also found its way on to the Black List in 2014. Jessica Chastain will star in the upcoming production, which will be directed by James Kent and produced by Amel.
Amel is also known for his work "The Titan" and "Old City Blues." He will next adapt the New York Times best-selling mystery-thriller "In A Dark Dark Wood" for producers Bruna Papandrea and Reese Witherspoon at New Line Cinema. Amel also wrote the upcoming Jackie Chan and John Cena action thriller, "Project X-Traction," which recently wrapped production and will be released in 2019.
