'I, Tonya' Breaks the Ice at the 2017 Winter KCET Cinema Series
Following a screening of “I, Tonya” director Craig Gillespie and writer/producer Steven Rogers attended a Q&A hosted by Cinema Series host Pete Hammond.
The film tells the story of the well-publicized story of figure skater Tonya Harding whose ex-husband arranged for a man to break the knee of rival skater Nancy Kerrigan at the 1994 National Figure Skating Championship. The criminal act cost Harding a national title and banned her from competitive figure skating in the U.S. for life.
Special guest Craig Gillespie is a critically acclaimed Emmy ® Award-winning feature, TV and commercial director. Gillespie’s film credits include "The Finest Hours," "Million Dollar Arm," "Fright Night" and "Lars and the Real Girl." Gillespie’s television credits include the Showtime series “The United States of Tara,” where he served as producer and director. For his strong and singular body of commercial work, Gillespie has been honored with some of the most prestigious accolades in the industry, including awards from the Cannes Film Festival, the Director’s Guild of America and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
Special guest Steven Rogers wrote the script for “I, Tonya”, which made the 2016 Black List, the annual survey of the “most liked” motion picture screenplays not yet produced. The film also made the 2016 Hollywood insider’s The Tracking Board list of the best spec scripts of the year. His film credits include "Hope Floats," "Stepmom," "Kate and Leopold," "P.S. I Love You," "Hope Floats," "Stepmom" and "Love the Coopers."
