Victoria & Abdul Screens at the 2017 Fall KCET Cinema Series
Following a screening of "Victoria & Abdul", Actor Adeel Akhtar attended a Q&A hosted by Cinema Series host Pete Hammond. Victoria & Abdul is based on journalist Shrabani Basu’s book “Victoria & Abdul: The True Story of the Queen’s Closest Confidant”, which chronicles the long-hidden friendship of Victoria and Abdul from their personal diaries and journals.
The film depicts this extraordinary story of the unlikely friendship between Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) and a young clerk, Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal), who becomes her spiritual advisor and her devoted friend. Academy Award® winner Dame Judi Dench (Shakespeare in Love) reunites with Academy Award-nominated director Stephen Frears (The Queen) for the role of Queen Victoria.
U.K. actor Adeel Akhtar’s breakout role was in Chris Morris’ satire Four Lions, which was nominated for the British Independent Film Award for Best Film and won the Empire Award for Best Comedy, among other accolades. Akhtar won a BAFTA Award and was nominated for a Royal Television Society Award for his performance in Murdered By My Father.
Akhtar and Hammond discussed working with Judi Dench, the recent Emmy Awards, Akhtar's upcoming projects, and the presence of people of color in the industry.
