KCET's quarterly screening series is back for Spring! Join us as we preview eight major new films prior to their first run local release as well as a classic James Coburn film on the ninth night.

Hosted by nationally recognized film expert Pete Hammond, the KCET Cinema series allows you to see independent and foreign films Tuesday nights at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in North Hollywood. A lively Q & A follows each screening with the filmmakers and top movie talent.

February 28th is our opening night. Make sure to arrive early so you can join us for our Opening Night Reception from 5:30-6:30 p.m. with KCET President and CEO Al Jerome After the reception we'll screen our Opening Night Film, Monsieur Lazhar. This 2012 Academy Award Nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, directed by Quebec's Philippe Falardeau, is the story of an Algerian immigrant who helps a class of middle-school students cope with the suicide of their beloved teacher. Special guest for the Q & A will be director Philippe Falardeau. (Music Box Films)

Salmon Fishing in The Yemen
Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt and Kristin Scott Thomas star in this comedy based on the best- selling novel by Paul Torday. One of Britain's leading fisheries experts (McGregor) is asked to help a wealthy sheik realize his dream of establishing fly fishing in his desert country as a popular sport. A "good will" story ensues between countries. A smash at the Toronto Film Festival. Q&A immediately follows with Oscar winning screenwriter Simon Beaufoy (The Full Monty, Slumdog Millionaire).(Lionsgate)

Jiro Dreams of Sushi

A fascinating documentary on Master Chef Jiro Ono, owner of Sukiyabashi Jiro, a modest sushi restaurant located in the Ginza district of Tokyo. It is considered to be the world's best sushi restaurant and is a Michelin Guide 3-start restaurant. Jiro-san, now in his 80s has been recognized as a "Living National Treasure" by the Japanese government. Chef and No Reservations host Anthony Bourdain called it "Thrilling and Beautiful." A smash hit at every film festival. Q&A immediately follows with director David Gelb.

Oscar nominated screenwriter Whit Stillman's (Metropolitan) latest revolves around a trio of girls led by Greta Gerwig who set out to revolutionize life at a grungy American University. James Coburn stars in this hilarious comedy western, one of his first big starring roles for Paramount in 1967. James Whitmore, Carroll O'Connor, Joan Blondell, Bruce Dern and the wonderful new screen presence of Margaret Blye light up the screen in a movie that rocked the code of the west with big laughs and a battle of the sexes. Q&A immediately follows with co-star Margaret Blye.

The film stars Diane Keaton, Kevin Kline, Dianne West, and Sam Shepard. From director Lawrence Kasden, the story of a woman who seemingly loves her dog Freeway more than her husband. The plot thickens when the husband accidently loses the dog while on his cellphone. The film is a warm and funny story about personal relationships.

A romantic comedy based on the truth of how Mortimer Granville devised the invention of the first vibrator in the name of medical science. A hit at the Toronto Film Festival it stars Maggie Gyllenhaal, Hugh Dancy , Jonathan Pryce, Rupert Everett, Felicity Jones. Q&A immediately follows with director Tanya Wexler.

In a local Texas town a mortician strikes up an odd relationship with a wealthy widow and all hell breaks loose. Hilarious film stars Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine and Matthe McConaughey. It was the opening night film of the LA Film Festival, it's a dark comedy you won't soon forget. Q&A follows with writer/director Richard Linklater.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Several British retirees travel to India to take up residence in what they have been told is a newly restored hotel that turns out to be anything BUT. Nevertheless the charms of the Marigold Hotel take hold as we get to know its new inhabitants. Stars Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Dev Patel. Directed by John Madden (Shakespeare In Love). NOTE: No Q&A for this film. Immediately following the screening, members will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite film of the series.
